CHAMPS Programs - Eastern metro area

Category: Programs for children and youth of parents with a mental illness (peer support and education programs)

Eastern Health FaPMI (Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness) coordinates direct programs for families that are run in partnership with other organisations. Eastern Health FaPMI runs CHAMPS which is a suite of peer support programs for children aged 8-12 years in families where a parent has a mental illness.

The aim of the programs is to give children age-appropriate information about mental illness. They can meet other children who may be in a similar situation and learn about healthy coping strategies. These programs compliment the support workers who work with the families.

These programs include:

A structured eight week program for 8-12 year old children during the school term at various venues in the eastern metropolitan region.
Alternative programs such as the CHAMPS Martial Arts as Therapy (MAT) Program run as the need arises.
A day event in December for the whole family to get together and have fun with other families in similar circumstances.
A monthly peer support program for FaPMI families who were previously involved in CHAMPS programs. Kids Club has a recreational emphasis.

The programs availability changes from term to term.

Who can refer to CHAMPS Programs?
Workers (health/family support/school) working with families where a parent has a mental illness can refer to the CHAMPS Programs. As the CHAMPS Programs are time limited, there is a need for the referrer to be able to identify a source of ongoing support to the family before and after the CHAMPS Program.

Programs are free.

  • Evaluation:

The CHAMPS model of peer support has been developing over the past 10 years and has been evaluated using some quantitative measures and has been extensively qualitatively evaluated using pre and post interviews, focus group discussions and questionnaires.

  • Evidence:

The programs have been evaluated by the Charles Sturt University while working with the Vic Champs Project 2003-2006.

    The evaluation focussed on:

    • Education in the community.
    • Peer and family support programs.
    • Enhancing community and workforce capacity to identify, assess, support and refer at-risk children.
    • Connectedness, self esteem and coping strategies of children and use of the SDQ to measure change in parents.

Outcomes indicated positive change in all areas.
